Good communication is essential for success in many work environments, including medical offices and accounting firms. If you're planning to work in these fields in the United States, fluency in English should be a top priority. At MSCT, we welcome students from around the world and give them the opportunity to build their linguistic skills through our English as a Second Language program — developing oral communication and business writing abilities that translate directly into professional settings. With a strong English foundation, you can prepare to advance into career-specific training like our Medical Office Specialist and Accounting programs. Here are 4 tips to help you make the most of your ESL experience.
1. Set Goals for Your Language Learning
No matter your current level of English, clear goals will help you stay on track and progress at a steady pace. The best goals are SMART — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. Think about the level of English you need to reach and how you can practice each week to get there. This might mean learning specific vocabulary one day and reviewing new grammar the next. The ESL program at MSCT will help you identify your goals and develop strategies for reaching them.
2. Consistency Is Key
When it comes to language learning, practice makes perfect. Alongside your ESL classes, you'll need to put in regular time and effort to see real improvement — not just homework, but reading extra material, listening to audio recordings, watching videos, and writing whenever you can. If you're planning to work in a medical office or accounting environment, expose yourself to relevant vocabulary and phrases you're likely to encounter in those professional settings and review them consistently.
3. Remember the Big Picture
Learning a new language takes time, and it can be easy to become disheartened along the way. The best way to stay on track is to remind yourself why you're doing it. At MSCT, many ESL students are working toward better career opportunities in the US by progressing to one of our training programs. Keeping your career goals in mind — whether that's the Medical Office Specialist program, Accounting, or another path — gives your language learning a clear purpose and keeps your motivation strong.
4. Tap into the Community
MSCT students have access to individualized support services including one-on-one tutoring, workshops, and student activities. You'll also be learning alongside other students with similar goals, making the community itself a valuable resource for practicing English and reviewing class material. During the ESL program, students have access to MSCT's Career Placement services to help prepare for the future, practice for interviews, and build a strategy for their language journey. At the same time, you'll gain greater awareness of different cultural habits and develop the skills needed to navigate and succeed in a new society.
